Iseo Lake and its treasures

MONTISOLA

Monte Isola is a world of its own in the middle of this beautiful lake. It covers 5 km² and rises to an altitude of 600 m. A short ferry trip from Sulzano, Iseo or Sale Marasino is the ideal spot for a pleasant day out. It is a quiet location because no four-wheeled vehicles are allowed on the island, except for public services. The fishing-boats line the shore and fish can be seen drying in the sun. The most interesting buildings are the Sanctuary of La Madonna della Ceriola and the Oldofredi-Martinengo Castle.

ZONE

The Zone boasts some very unsual features. The locals call them ‘’stone witches’’ but the technical term is ‘’erosion pyramids’’. The pinnacles of earth up to 30 metres high, each with a rock a top. Rain and wind have eroded the surrounding soil over thousands of years, leaving the pyramids seemingly more precarious than a house of cards. Zone, which lies above Marone, is a delightful village of old wood – and – stone houses dating back to the 17th century. It is a quiet summer resort with restaurants and an excellent starting point for excursions.
